Trusted private attorneys
Obtaining legal assistance can be expensive. Filing an asylum application or hiring an attorney to represent you in court can cost thousands of dollars. Still, scheduling a brief consultation with a private attorney may be both helpful and affordable.

A consultation typically costs $80–$300 and lasts 30–60 minutes. You are not required to hire the attorney afterward. During the consultation, you can explain your situation, and the attorney will outline your legal options. They will also provide the cost if you choose to continue working with them. For many people, simply knowing their options brings peace of mind.

Identifying trusted attorneys
What you should expect from a reliable attorney:

1. Sign a contract
You should receive a written contract that clearly explains the services to be provided and any fees. The contract must be signed by both you and the legal services provider, and you should be given a copy.
2. Be informed about your case
A legal services provider should explain which immigration benefit you may qualify for, the application process, and answer your questions. After your case is filed, they should keep you updated on its progress. Keep in mind that immigration cases often move very slowly.
3. Obtain copies of all documents
A legal services provider must give you copies of all documents filed on your behalf, as well as government receipts. They should never refuse to provide these. In most cases, an attorney or DOJ-accredited representative should not charge you for copies unless your original agreement states otherwise. Once a case is filed, you or your provider will also receive notices from the government.
