Looking for a private attorney?
Filing an asylum application or hiring a lawyer for court can cost thousands of dollars. But scheduling a short consultation with a private lawyer is often helpful and more affordable. A consultation usually costs $80–$300 and lasts 30–60 minutes. You are not required to hire the lawyer afterward.
During the consultation, you explain your situation, and the lawyer will outline your legal options and tell you the cost if you decide to continue working with them. For many people, simply knowing their options provides peace of mind. When you call the lawyers listed below, please mention that you were referred by South Brooklyn Sanctuary.

Confirm that your attorney is trustworthy
-
Sign contract
A trustworthy lawyer gives you a written contract that explains the services and fees. Both you and the lawyer sign it, and you keep a copy in your native language.
-
Clear information
A trustworthy lawyer explains which immigration benefit you may qualify for, describes the application process, answers your questions, and keeps you updated after your case is filed. Keep in mind that immigration cases often move very slowly.
-
Copies of documents
A trustworthy lawyer gives you copies of all documents filed on your behalf, along with government receipts. They never refuse to provide copies, and they only charge for them if your contract clearly says so.
